Your calendar can look organized and still be fragile.

One meeting runs long.

One task takes 40 minutes more than expected.

One unexpected request lands at noon.

Suddenly three later blocks have to move.

The problem is not always bad planning.

It is planning with no room for reality.

A lot of schedules are built around a quiet assumption:

Everything will happen roughly when you expect it to happen.

That makes the plan look efficient.

It also means one delay can break the entire day.

The fix is not covering your calendar in empty buffer blocks.

You need a Failure Margin - enough flexibility inside the day that one miss does not force you to redesign everything after it.

A useful Failure Margin has four parts:

  • fixed work that does not move

  • movable work that can shift

  • a sacrifice order for when capacity disappears

  • one destination for work that spills over

Here is the rule that exposes the problem:

If one delayed block forces you to move three other things, your day has no failure margin.

The goal is not a loose calendar.

It is a calendar that knows what to do when the original plan stops being possible.

Here is how to build it.
