Rules beat willpower

Make policies so your best choice happens by default

If it isn’t a policy, it’s optional
If it’s optional, your mood will win

Most people try to white knuckle their goals with motivation
By 3pm they’re negotiating with themselves and losing

The truth:

  • Decisions drain energy

  • Policies kill negotiation

  • Identity hardens around rules you actually keep

I stopped arguing with myself when I wrote personal policies and made them public
No meetings before 11
Phone lives in another room during deep work
Publish one proof of work daily
Gym on calendar like a paid appointment
Sugar only on Saturdays
Suddenly there was nothing to decide
Just a script to follow

Do this today:

  • Pick one domain health, money, craft

  • Write three policies that remove your most common negotiations
    Examples
I don’t open inbox before my first power block
I train at 5pm on weekdays no swaps
I spend the first dollar of each paycheck on investments

  • Make them visible lock screen note, desk card, calendar reminders

  • Add light stakes if you break a policy, pay a small fine or do a 10 minute penalty walk

  • Review weekly keep, tighten, or replace

Pro tips:

  • Phrase rules as I don’t not I can’t

  • Protect the first domino mornings decide momentum

  • Keep rules few and sharp so they survive bad days

You don’t need more discipline
You need fewer debates
